Anticipation is brutal. The Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout was supposed to be in Ontario last winter, but a fire meant supply was limited and we were left dry. This year, it arrived but has only been available at the Queens Quay LCBO, meaning I had to wait till I had enough free time to head down (a difficult time when you work streaks of fifteen and nine days in a row in the same month). Remember that trip to see New Moon? I got more out of it than just one pint.
Was all the anticipation worth it? Is this a world-class beer? Well, maybe. Right now, I would have to say no. Though the beer is packed full of flavour (aside from the obvious chocolate, a get some brandy and cherries), it’s also a really harsh beer to drink, even for a 10% sipper. I’m hoping some time under the kitchen sink will calm this down and mellow it out. (It better – there are three bottles under there, which is about all the storage space I can allow.) We’ll see how they’re doing after three and six months, maybe paired with something dense and rich.
