There have been some Dogfish Head bottles sitting in the fridge for a while and this Sunday night seemed like a good night to drink them. After many nights out in a row, it was nice to make dinner, put in a movie (I finally got around to seeing Star Trek) and relax.
The Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA was the logical opener, especially with some deliciously spicy chicken on the menu. It was nice to go back to it after having so many IPAs and finding that it still stood up as a nicely balanced beer. The pine flavours stood out more this time, but it seemed less intense than something like the Corne du Diable. A lovely beer for dinner when matched with the right food.
The dessert beer was a Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA, an 18% alcohol-by-volume beer (and by far the most potent I have ever had. Technically an American strong ale, I like to think of it was a super IPA). I was expecting a tonne of hops from this, but it is more of a sweet liqueur with orange flavours, presumably because of the high alcohol content. Even sharing the bottle, it was much too syrupy. One of the weirder beers I’ve had (if you choose not to think of it as a beer, I understand) but not one I think I will ever try again.
