January 2nd

Even if you’ve only read a couple of posts, you can probably tell that I’m mostly an at-home drinker. So it was no surprise that I found myself staying in on a Saturday night, enjoying some peace and quiet, with the Leaf game on TV and a Samuel Smith’s Winter Welcome Ale in hand. After the holiday season, it feels justified.

Compared to the slate of seasonal beers that have been written about lately, this one is lackluster. Lots of malty sweetness without enough hops at the end to balance everything out. Even the hoppy finish has a bit of a funky taste to it, which isn’t bad but not exactly tasty at the same time. This is just too plain sweet, without any spices, roastiness or alcoholic heat to taste like a beer to get you through the colder months.
