My attempt at getting on a patio was a big dud. There are very few times I will be willing to wait in line for beer and today was not one of them. So I grabbed a seat at the bar in the Victory Cafe and enjoyed a pint of the F & M Stonehammer Maple Red Ale. It arrived with a good two-finger head of creamy goodness, which was surprising from a cask ale. This is a sweet, malty beer with just a hint of maple. Just enough bitterness in the finish to cleanse the palate. A really nice reddish hue. A fine beer, but a little too sweet and lacking any complexity.
I first tried Beau’s Lug Tread Lagered Ale during the winter and was not too keen on it, but vowed to give it another shot in warmer weather. What a difference! This bready, grassy and slightly grainy beer is perfect for days when you’re outside, soaking up the sun. There’s something odd about it, right down to the dry finish, but I love that it tastes unique. This will probably appeal to a wide range of beer drinkers.
