2013 Predictions: Update #1

Two of the 2013 Predictions have come true and, to the surprise of very few people, they involve the barrel aged beer prediction (“The LCBO will release eight new barrel or oak aged beers from Ontario breweries”). The first two are:

  • Great Lakes 25th Anniversary Bourbon-Barrel Aged Imperial Stout
  • Radical Road Canny Man

A slow start to the year, but it’s nice to get the first points on the board. A lot of other barrel aged beers have been announced, so this category should fill up fairly quickly. It should also be noted that the Great Lakes beer was also close to another prediction, but came five cents short of the $15 mark.

This is unorthodox, but I’m also adding a prediction for 2013. This isn’t based on any secret knowledge, but I predict an Ontario brewery will win Brewery of the Year or Beer of the Year at this year’s Canadian Brewing Awards. No Ontario brewery has won either award since Mill Street won brewery of the year in 2009. I didn’t want to save this prediction until next year once it had occurred to me just in case a brewery does win either award (which I think is quite likely). The CBAs will be taking place in Victoria, BC from May 9th-11th.
